I have recently come across an article on Dazeddigital – http://www.dazeddigital.com online magazine which grabbed my attention..
As i was scrolling though the website i came a cross the title : ”Ryan McGinley pits naked bodies against extreme elements” the words : body/ against / extreme elements were the once that urged me to proceed to the article.. The American photographer Ryan McGinley winter is glorious / full of wonders. in these particular series he is presenting a wintery scenery filled with ice and snow…with nude bodies which are shown with freezer burn and cut knees..
”McGinley and co. tackled the extremity of the frozen landscape – utilising ice-fishing tents, propane tanks and rock-climbing equipment in order to face the harsh reality of such weather. The images are worth it though, a breathtaking series of bare pink skin against white-blue ice.” – Dazed Magazine
In my resent work at the Alps i used my brothers body at some point at the shooting. I realised that one of the best photographs in the series were the lasts once were the body were the body was trying to balance on the fallen tree. It was the peak of the moment that i knew it would come..the moment where my brother started complaing about the fact that he cant hold anyone more..!
An interesting point in my work – which i want to explore more is ‘tension’ and the act of pushing my limits and body. I would never imagine though asking someone to do so..or at least to the extent of causing physical or emotional pain.
These three photos i like in particular, maybe because they are having a surrealistic feel..i always liked surrealism..and of course seeing something that looks unreal. The images makes me wonder about the use of scale…of how little and how vulnerable we appear in front of the power of nature. Due to the size you cant really tell from first site that, these little dots appearing in the ‘white veil’ are actuall human models!
My favourite one among those three i think is the second one on the right.. maybe because of the body posture..( the body is leaning towards the rocks and the head is bowed near the chest.)
In both images the pain of the female body is obvious..scratches and burn marks from the ice are visible and the human expressions in image above really shocked me..
